Tell it your plan#
- Find the speeds you pay for, on your bill or your provider's site: a download and an upload speed, in Mbps.
- Open the Weigher's page (Open on its card in Castellan), and open Settings.
- Fill in Your plan: download and Your plan: upload, and press Save.
From then on, each sample shows as a share of your plan.
Read the verdict#
Under the fair measure, for the last 7 and the last 30 days:
- The median download, upload and latency, and the share of your plan.
- The samples under half your plan's download.
- The outages, and how long they lasted, and on whose side.
- How much of the time the line was watched.
- The slowest times of the week: weekdays or weekends, by night, morning, afternoon and evening.
And a verdict in plain words, such as: "Over the last 30 days you got a median 82% of the download speed you pay for (41 of 50 Mbps) and 95% of the upload; slowest weekday evenings (61%); 3 outages totalling 47 minutes, 2 of them on the provider's side." The Weigher's code writes it, from the samples.
When the line was watched less than 90% of the time, it says so. Skipped and failed samples aren't counted.
Make it a fair test#
- Use a cable to the router if you can, at least for a while: Wi-Fi often limits the speed more than the line does.
- Raise Download per sample (Advanced) to 50 MB or more if your plan is over 200 Mbps.
- Leave the PC on, with the Weigher on duty, so the line is watched most of the time.
Take it to your provider#
Under Export:
- Samples (CSV): every sample, with its time, speeds, latency, share of your plan, connection and signal, and why any was skipped.
- Outages (CSV): each outage's start, end, length and side.
- A printable report: a plain report with both verdicts, the slowest times, and every outage and sample, to print or save as PDF.
The CSV files open in any spreadsheet.
