Written for Chamberlain 0.3.5. Chamberlain is at 0.3.6 now (1 small release since: what changed).

Before you start: an app password#

The Chamberlain signs in with an app password, a password your mail provider makes for one program, not your own password. You need two-step verification on first.

ProviderMake an app passwordServer
GmailTurn on 2-Step Verification, then make one at myaccount.google.com/apppasswordsimap.gmail.com
Outlook.comTurn on two-step verification in your Microsoft account's security settings, then make one thereoutlook.office365.com
iCloudAt account.apple.com: Sign-In and Security, App-Specific Passwordsimap.mail.me.com

The port is 993 for all three. Another provider's IMAP server and port are in its help.

Add the account#

  1. Open the Chamberlain's page: Open on its card in Castellan.
  2. Open Settings, and under Mail accounts, add one: a name you'll know it by, the server and port, your user name (usually your email address), the folders to read (INBOX at first; Gmail's are named like [Gmail]/Sent Mail), and days back, how far back to read (90 at first).
  3. Press Save.
  4. On the page, under Mail passwords, type the app password, and press Save.

The next round fetches the new mail, 500 messages at a time, oldest first: a big mailbox takes a few rounds the first time. Run now starts one.

What it does with your password#

It's encrypted at once for your Windows account, and kept apart from everything else. From then on, the page shows only "saved", and when. Replace and Remove change it. It's never shown again, logged, or backed up.

Read-only#

The Chamberlain never sends, moves, flags or deletes mail, and opens each folder read-only, so nothing is marked read. Mail older than days back leaves the index. A message you delete on the server stays in the index until it's older than that.
