The Warrener, which tidies Downloads and the Desktop

What the Warrener suggests for each loose file in Downloads and on the Desktop (a better name, and a home), how it decides, what it leaves alone, and its settings.

What the Warrener does#

Downloads and the Desktop breed like rabbits. The warrener kept the lord's rabbit warren; the Warrener keeps yours.

Every hour it lists the loose files at the top of your Downloads folder and your Desktop, and suggests for each a home and, for documents, a better name. Nothing moves until you tick it. Every move can be put back, and nothing is ever overwritten or deleted.

The Warrener comes with the Household license. Duplicate files are Heiward's job, not the Warrener's.

The kinds are decided by rule. For documents, a small AI model on this PC reads the start of each one and suggests a short name, starting with a date when there is one ("2026-09 Car insurance renewal"), and one folder from your list. The suggestion is labelled with where it was written ("note from the NPU, unverified", say), and you can change both before you file.

Code checks what the model says: a folder not on your list becomes Documents\Other, and a name that's empty, junk or a sentence keeps the file's own name.

What it leaves alone#

These are listed under Left alone, with why:

Downloads still in progress.
Files created or changed in the last hour: still downloading, or still in use.
Shortcuts on the Desktop.
Hidden and system files, and Office's lock files.
Folders, and anything inside them: it only looks at the top level.

Your secrets stay put#

A file whose name says it holds secrets (passwords, recovery codes, keys) is never opened: the model sees its name only.
Passwords, card numbers, keys and the like are taken out of the text before it is kept or the model sees it.
A OneDrive file that's only online is never read, since that would download it.

Without the local AI, everything decided by rule works the same, and documents are offered Documents\Other with their own names. See Set up the local AI.

Its settings#

A folder is a Windows folder and the path below it (Documents\Receipts), followed wherever Windows keeps it, OneDrive included, or a full path (D:\Scans).
