When the Butler isn't working as it should

What to do when the Butler doesn't find a game's saves, a save is skipped, a game shows as a number, a restored save doesn't load, or it waits for a drive.

A game isn't listed#

  • It keeps its saves elsewhere: in its install folder, the registry, or only in its launcher's cloud. Find where (the game's support pages, or PCGamingWiki, usually say), and add the folder under Other save folders.
  • Its place is off under Where to look for saves.
  • Its folder is empty. An empty folder is no game.

A Steam game shows as a number#

Its save folder is named by Steam's number for the game, and no Steam library on this PC lists it any more: it was uninstalled, say. The saves are backed up all the same.

A save was skipped#

The game was running and had it open. It's copied the next round, after you close the game.

A restored save doesn't load#

  • The game was running when you copied it back: close it, and copy again.
  • Steam's cloud put its own copy back over yours. Turn off Steam Cloud for that game, in its Properties, copy the save back, then turn it on again.
  • Try an earlier version, from Earlier versions.

Nothing is backed up#

No place is chosen yet. Set Back up to: see The Butler.

It's waiting for the drive#

The drive isn't plugged in, or its letter changed. Plug it in, or change Back up to.

Its page won't open#

Its page is http://butler.localhost:21212/. Open on its card in Castellan starts it if it's down, and Castellan checks every two minutes that it answers, and opens it again if it has stopped. Your backup is plain files: open it in File Explorer whether the page is up or not.
