When the Pinder isn't working as it should

What to do when the Pinder's page shows one line, a process you use is in the pound, a stray isn't listed, an impound is refused or fails, or there are no notes.

Written for Pinder 0.5.18. Pinder is at 0.5.19 now (1 small release since: what changed).

Its page shows only one line#

"The Pinder is for the people who make Castellan's agents": developer features are off, because no developer agent is hired. Hire the Pinder in Castellan. While they're off, it does no rounds.

A process you use is in the pound#

Orphan is about the parent, not about use. A detached server you still use (an adb server, a background build node) is listed once it has run 30 minutes.

  • Let it be keeps it out from now on. If it comes back, its command line changes each start: widen its pattern in the allowlist with *. See Let it be.
  • A server of yours that's always detached: add it to Shared servers.

One of your own agents, or a checkout's server, is listed as a squatter#

The manor's agents are exempt by their installed copy, or by their port when something there answers /api/ping. A development checkout's server, or an agent not on Castellan's staff, loses its exemption when its port stops answering (a hung server, say). Add it to More agent ports, or bring its page back.

A stray you can see isn't listed#

  • It isn't a runtime: only the names in Runtimes watched can be strays.
  • It hasn't run long enough: an orphan counts after 30 minutes.
  • Something live is above it: a terminal or editor in Never under these.
  • It's another user's, or elevated: Windows hides their command lines from the Pinder.
  • It's busy in bursts: CPU is a 3-second sample each round, so a process busy now and then can be missed. The runaway clock also needs the Pinder running: after a gap it starts again.

An impound was refused or failed#

The Impound log says why:

  • Refused: the process ended or restarted since the round (a new start time), or it no longer counts as a stray. Run a round and look again.
  • Failed: most often it's elevated or another user's, and the Pinder never forces a stop. Stop it yourself, from an elevated Task Manager.

There are no notes#

The page says why:

  • The local AI isn't set up: see Set up the local AI.
  • "Busy: notes deferred to a later round": the accelerators were busy. The next round tries again.
  • Model calls per round is 0.

The strays are listed and impounded the same without notes.

Its page won't open#

Its page is http://pinder.localhost:19393/. Open on its card in Castellan starts it if it's down. It starts at sign-in from the scheduled task \Pinder\Home page.
