An app isn't listed#

  • winget doesn't know it. Apps installed some other way, with no matching package, aren't listed. Update it from its own menu.
  • You held it back. It's under Held back; take it off the list in Settings.
  • It hasn't looked yet. It looks every 6 hours. Press Run now.

An upgrade can't be ticked#

Its id was cut short, and winget can't upgrade an app by half its id. Update it from its own menu.

An install failed#

The log says what came back. Most often:

  • The app was open, and its installer couldn't replace it. Close it, and try again.
  • The installer asked something, to close the app or for an administrator, and nobody answered. It fails after 30 minutes. Try again while you're at the PC, and answer the prompt.
  • Upgrading App Installer, winget itself, may end partway. Press Run now, and see if it's still listed.

An upgrade keeps coming back#

Some apps report their version in a way winget misreads, so the same upgrade is offered again after it installed. If the app's own About says it's up to date, Hold back it.

It isn't marked as a security fix#

The Thatcher reads security from the release notes' words. Many apps give only an address for their notes, which it doesn't fetch. The folded release notes, and their address, are on the page.

There are no notes#

The line under the list says why:

  • "winget gives no release notes for this version": there's nothing to sum up.
  • Busy: the local AI was busy. The next round asks again.
  • The local AI isn't set up: see Set up the local AI.

Its page won't open#

Its page is http://thatcher.localhost:20404/. Open on its card in Castellan starts it if it's down, and Castellan checks every two minutes that it answers, and opens it again if it has stopped.
