When the Miller isn't working as it should

What to do when the Miller doesn't take a file, refuses a copy, leaves videos waiting with no encoder, can't read HEIC photos, suggests no names, or its page won't open.

A file isn't taken#

  • It's still settling. A file is taken once its size has stayed the same for 30 seconds. The queue shows the seconds left.
  • It's in a folder inside the hopper. Only the hopper's top level is looked at. Move it up.
  • It's left as it is, and the page says why: a video under 10 MB, a photo within 4K and under 8 MB, an HDR video. Lower Leave videos under or Leave photos under (Advanced) to grind smaller files.
  • Another file is being ground. One at a time: it's next.

A copy was refused#

The page lists the checks it failed:

  • "Smaller" failed: the copy wasn't under 90% of the original. The file was already well compressed, as HEIC photos and many phone videos are. Nothing's wrong: there's nothing to save. Smaller files under Video quality may get one through.
  • The length or size failed: write to us, with the file's details from the page.

Videos wait, and it says "no encoder available"#

The Miller couldn't find a way to make video on this PC. The page lists what it tried and what each one said. It fetches its own copy of the video tool, FFmpeg, the first time it needs one: if the PC was offline, it tries again 15 minutes later. If you set FFmpeg (Advanced) to a copy of your own, make sure it's a full build, or empty the setting to let the Miller fetch its own.

HEIC photos are left as they are#

Windows needs two free extensions from the Microsoft Store to read them: HEIF Image Extensions and HEVC Video Extensions. The page says which is missing. Install them, and press Try again.

Videos have no suggested name#

The line under each copy says why:

  • The local AI isn't set up: see Set up the local AI.
  • "busy: name suggestion deferred to a later round": the local AI was busy. Names are asked for every 5 minutes, so it comes soon.
  • Suggest names for videos is off in Settings.

A name is often plain: the AI sees one frame. Type your own when you rename it.

The Recycle Bin button refused#

The original is on a network or removable drive, the Recycle Bin is turned off, or the file is bigger than the bin. Windows would delete it for good. Delete it yourself if you're sure.

Its page won't open#

Its page is http://miller.localhost:19292/. Open on its card in Castellan starts it if it's down, and Castellan checks every two minutes that it answers, and opens it again if it has stopped.
