When the local AI isn't working as it should

It says "not working"#

The local AI on that accelerator couldn't start. Meanwhile your agents use another accelerator, and the Smith tries it again within 10 minutes. If it stays that way:

1. Choose Run now, in the title bar, to have the Smith look again.
2. Restart the PC, if a driver was just updated.
3. Open Set up the local AI, tick that accelerator, and choose Set up to set it up again.

It says "not set up"#

No agent can use the local AI there yet. Set it up: Set up the local AI.

Set up fails#

The lines under Set up say which step failed.

• A download failed or didn't match: your connection dropped, or something changed the file on its way. Choose Set up again: what was downloaded and checked already isn't fetched again.
• It didn't answer the test question: it isn't used, and what you had stays as it was. Update your NPU's or graphics card's driver from your PC maker's site, restart, and try again.
• Not enough disk space: free some, and try again.

Your NPU isn't used#

• It's an NPU the Smith can't use yet (AMD's Ryzen 7040 and 8040), or its driver is too old: the page names it, with the reason. See Which NPUs it can use.
• It's switched off: choose Switch on on its card.
• It's resting: it starts by itself as soon as an agent needs it, in about 10 seconds.

The local AI is slow#

• The first answer after resting takes longer: about 10 seconds while the model loads. Raise Let the local AI … rest after in Settings to keep it ready longer, at the cost of the memory it holds.
• Agents take turns. One agent's request waits for the one before it. Castellan's Accelerators shows who holds each and who's waiting. See Where the work runs.

Your PC is short of memory#

The local AI keeps its memory while it's ready. Lower Let the local AI … rest after in the Smith's Settings, so it rests sooner. With 0, it never rests.

A game stutters#

The Smith stops the local AI on a graphics card once a game is using the card and no agent has for 2 minutes. To keep the graphics card free while you play, on a PC with an NPU, turn off Use the graphics card for models when there's an NPU in Castellan's Settings > The manor.

The Smith's page won't open#

Its page is http://smith.localhost:20202/. Open on its card in Castellan starts it if it's down. It starts at sign-in from the scheduled task \Smith\Home page. If that doesn't help, run Castellan's setup again, with Install again what's installed already ticked. See Install Castellan.
