Written for Castellan 0.16.51. Castellan is at 0.16.55 now (4 small releases since: what changed).

Before you start#

  • A Windows PC: an Arm PC (such as Snapdragon) or an x64 PC (Intel or AMD).
  • An email address. Castellan's setup comes from your account on this site, and signing in is how the setup knows what your license covers. A new email starts the 7-day trial: no card.
  • No administrator rights, and nothing to install first. The setup brings everything it needs, its own runtime included.

1. Download the setup#

  1. Go to Get started, enter your email, and type in the six-digit code we send you. If the email is new, that starts your trial. Already subscribed? Sign in on your account the same way.
  2. On your account page, under Download, choose the setup for your PC. The page tells you which processor this PC has: Arm64 for Snapdragon PCs, x64 for Intel and AMD.

Not sure which you have? Windows' Settings > System > About says "ARM-based processor" or "x64-based processor".

2. Run it#

Open the setup you downloaded. Its name ends in -arm64.exe or -x64.exe, for the PC it's for.

Castellan is in early access and its setup isn't code-signed yet, so the first time it runs Windows says Windows protected your PC. Choose More info, then Run anyway.

3. Follow the setup's steps#

  1. License terms. Read Castellan's license terms, tick I accept the license terms, and choose Next.
  2. Your license. This signs the PC in before anything is installed. Type the email you used on this site, choose Send the code, then type the six-digit code from the email and choose Sign in. Or, if you have a license key (CASTELLAN-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX), type it and choose Enter. A PC that holds a license already isn't asked.
  3. What is this PC mostly for? Choose Gaming, Software development or Everyday use. It's only a starting point: it decides which staff are ticked on the next step.
  4. Your first staff. The ones that suit the PC are ticked. Untick any you don't want, tick any you do.
  5. What to set up, then Set up. Each step shows as it goes; it takes a minute or two.
  6. Castellan is set up. Choose Open Castellan.

Set up without signing in on the license step goes on without a license: Castellan installs, and you sign in later from its Settings > License. Until then only Heiward, which is free, can be hired.

You can hire, switch and let staff go at any time afterwards, from Castellan's page: see Hiring, switching and letting staff go.

What the setup does#

  • It installs Castellan in your user folder (%USERPROFILE%\.manor), starts it, and opens Castellan's page in your browser: http://castellan.localhost:18585/. It's a page served by Castellan on this PC, for this PC only.
  • It puts Castellan in the Start menu and on the desktop, and in Windows' Settings > Apps, where you can uninstall it.
  • On a PC that has Castellan already, it updates Castellan and the staff installed there. Install again what's installed already repairs an install that's gone wrong.
  • If a step fails, the setup says which, and Show the log has the details. Write to us with it: see Support.

Setting up another PC#

Each license covers up to 3 PCs. Download the setup on the next PC from the same account and run it the same way. When a license is on all its PCs, Castellan's Settings > License lets you give a PC's place back: see Your license, the trial and your PCs.
