What a license covers#
Castellan itself is free. Its staff come with a license, in two tiers:
| Tier | Covers |
|---|---|
| Household | The household's staff: the Porter, the Clerk and the Scribe, the Herald, the Warrener, the Miller and the Chronicler, the Surveyor, the Lamplighter and the Watchman, the Smith, the Chamberlain, the Thatcher, the Reckoner and the Marshal, the Weigher and the Bridgeward, the Shepherd and the Constable, the Cellarer and the Butler. |
| Workshop | Everything in Household, and the developers' staff: Reeve, the Toller, the Assayer, the Developer Herald, the Pinder and the Steward. |
Heiward is free, and needs no license. The prices, monthly or yearly, are on the pricing page. Each license covers up to 3 PCs.
The 7-day trial#
The trial is everything, Workshop included, for 7 days, with no card. It's once per email and once per PC. It starts when you sign in with a new email: on this site's Get started, in Castellan's setup, or in Castellan's Settings > License.
When the trial ends without a license, the staff it hired go off duty, once: each is stopped, its role left vacant, and its card says why. Their settings and data are kept. Subscribe, or enter a key, and they're straight back on duty, as they were.
If you stop paying#
The Freehold license is for individuals, freelance work included: stop paying and keep what you have.
- Everything installed keeps working, for good. Nothing is ever stopped because a subscription lapsed: only the trial's end stops anything.
- Any release published while you paid stays yours to download and reinstall, on any of your PCs.
- Releases published after that wait until you subscribe again. Castellan says so on the agent's card and under Updates ("Your updates paused on …: subscribe again to get it"), and catches up at once when you do.
- Moving from Workshop to Household keeps the developers' staff you have, at their versions.
Signing a PC in#
Castellan's setup signs the PC in as it installs. To sign in later, or with another email, open Castellan's Settings > License:
- Type your email and choose Send the code.
- Type the six-digit code from the email (it works for 10 minutes) and choose Sign in.
The PC takes a place on that email's license (the best one, if it bought more than one). A license key works too: under Or enter a key, type CASTELLAN-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX (a key starting MANOR- works as well).
Settings > License then says what this PC holds: the trial and the days left; Household or Workshop, with "updates until" a date; or "updates paused since" a date, with Subscribe again.
Moving to a new PC#
When a license is on all 3 of its PCs, Settings > License names them, and Give its place back frees a PC you no longer use, so the new one can take it. A license can free other PCs' places 3 times in 30 days; past that, License says when it can again.
On a PC you're leaving, Give this PC's place back frees its own place at once (that's never limited). Everything installed there keeps working. Uninstalling Castellan and removing its data gives the place back too.
Your account page on this site lists your PCs as well.
Subscribing and managing it#
- Subscribe, in Settings > License or on your account page, opens the checkout for a plan in your browser.
- Manage subscription opens the payments portal, to change plans, update your card, or cancel. Cancelling stops the renewal: the subscription runs to the end of the period already paid, and payments aren't refunded for partial periods or unused time. See the terms.
- Coming back from either, Castellan fetches the new license by itself.
Hiring without a license#
A role's card offers Hire only for the agents your license covers. For one it doesn't, the card shows its tier and Subscribe, or Start the trial on a PC that's never had one. An agent hired already is never touched by a change of license.
