What the Butler is#

The butler was the head of the household's servants, the one you asked when you wanted to know how things were done. In Castellan, the Butler is the small bell in the bottom-right corner of every page. Ask it about the manor and its staff: what an employee does, how updates work, where a setting is.

The Butler comes with Castellan: there's no one to hire, and no license to add.

Asking it#

  1. Click the bell. A box opens above it.
  2. Type your question in your own words ("What does the Shepherd do?") and press Ask.
  3. While it works, the Butler says what it's doing, line by line: looking through the guide, asking the Smith, who keeps the staff's AI models, and checking what the Smith said.

You can close the box while it works. A dot on the bell says an answer came in.

Where its answers come from#

The Butler answers only from Castellan's own guide and from what each of your employees is for. Each answer says which part of the guide it came from, with a link to it.

  • When the guide doesn't say, the Butler tells you so rather than guess.
  • When the Smith's answer doesn't match the guide, the Butler doesn't pass it on as fact. It shows you what the guide itself says.
  • When the Smith is busy with another employee's work, the Butler says so and waits for it to finish. A question you're waiting on goes ahead of background work.

On this PC only#

The Butler's answers run on this PC's NPU. Nothing you ask leaves the PC, and the model loads only when you ask.

The Butler is on by default where this PC has an NPU. Elsewhere it's off, since a model on the processor is too slow to wait for. Ask the Butler, in Castellan's Settings, turns it on or off.

The game-saves Butler#

Castellan once had an employee called the Butler that backed up game saves. It's retired: game launchers back saves up to their clouds, and the Cellarer backs up the rest. If it still works on your PC, see the game-saves Butler.
