What Castellan puts right by itself#

Every two minutes, Castellan checks that each agent on duty answers. One that doesn't is opened again, as its card's Open would, and its card says so for a day. It's tried three times, five minutes apart, then once an hour.

It never changes whether an agent is on duty: an agent you stopped stays stopped, and nothing is opened again while an update, a firing or a restore is running.

Much else puts itself right too: a failed update is tried again, and leaves the old version working; a backup that fails is tried again an hour later; the local AI moves from the NPU to the graphics card or processor when one fails. Support lists it all.

Needs you#

What Castellan can't put right by itself comes to you, in Needs you: a band across the top of Castellan's page. Each item says what's wrong, and links to the page whose button settles it (On the Lamplighter's page, say). Castellan never acts on an item for you.

WhatWhen it's raised
An agent that won't come back, after its triesat once
Something an agent says is waiting for you, such as the Lamplighter's guard to updateat once
An alert Reeve raises about one of your repositoriesat once
A problem the Surveyor has found that hasn't clearedafter six hours
A port two agents claim, or one another program has takenafter a quarter of an hour
An agent's new release that Castellan can't readafter two hours
Castellan's update checks failingafter twelve hours
Settings backups failing two days running, or their folder out of reachat once

While the PC is offline, what's only the network's fault is left out.

Dismiss on an item quiets it until it clears and comes back. With the Steward hired, its own items are listed here too, and a dismissal on either page holds on both.

Notifications#

Each new item in Needs you is also a Windows notification, which opens Needs you when you click it. Each agent sends its own notifications too, about its own work: what each one tells you about is in its own settings.

Settings > Notifications decides when any of them may, for Castellan and every agent at once:

  • Notify me: the agents' Windows notifications. Off, they still show on each agent's page and in Castellan, but Windows stays quiet.
  • Quiet hours: no notifications between these two times. They're 22:00 to 07:00 until you change them, and may span midnight. The same time twice means no quiet hours. While it's quiet, the section says until when.

Something raised during the quiet hours is told when they end, if it's still open.
