Before you update

  • The accelerators move from Reeve's config.json to %USERPROFILE%\.manor\accelerators\config.json the first time the Smith (or Reeve's keeper) reads them after updating: a copy, word for word, and Reeve's file is left as it was. Nothing to do.
  • On a PC whose NPU isn't set up yet, the Smith's or Manor's Set up now offers its maker's server and models (several GB) and asks first.

A security fix: a folder name with curly quotes in it can no longer be run as a command.

What changed

  • A safer hand-off to Windows OCR. Clerk reads your screenshots and scans with Windows' own text recognition, through PowerShell, and tells it where its working files are: a folder under your Windows user folder. PowerShell treats the curly quotes ‘ and ’ as ordinary quotes, so a folder name containing them (a user folder called O’Brien, say) could end that text early, and the rest of the name could be run as a command. Every kind of quote is now escaped, so a name is always read as a name.
  • Your PC's own names for its accelerators. The page says which accelerator captions pictures and re-ranks a search by the name this PC gives it (the NPU by its model, such as "Qualcomm Hexagon", a graphics card by its own name), never a name written in Reeve's settings. Until the manor has looked at the PC, they're "the NPU" and "the graphics card".

A shorter Settings page, and a tour for new hires.

What's new

  • A tour. When Manor hires Clerk it offers its tour: what it does, which screenshot and scan folders it reads and whether it captions pictures, then its page. Open it again any time at #/tour.
  • The manor's page frame. The title bar, on and off duty, the theme and Back to Manor are the same as on every agent's page, and Run now is in the title bar.
  • A search shows its results on the page itself, without reloading it. A link from before (/?q=…) still opens its search.

What changed

  • Settings is short. It shows the screenshot, scan and PDF folders and whether it captions pictures. The limits per round and per file, re-ranking by meaning and the round interval are under Advanced.
  • The round interval and the captions per round are now the manor's usual settings. Your old values are kept.

A caption or a re-ranking is never said to be the NPU's when Clerk doesn't know where it ran.

What changed

  • A caption written before Clerk 0.3.0 says nothing of where it was written. It was labelled "from the NPU", even on a PC without one; it's now "from a local model".
  • When no accelerator in Reeve's config serves embeddings (or Reeve isn't set up), the search is re-ranked with npu-embed's default address. That server was called the NPU; it's now named by its model and address alone, and a re-ranking there says "by a local model".
  • The Steward's kit 2.20.0: a model on a graphics card is never called the NPU, and pages show a round as it starts and ends. What the PC has (detection's hardware.json) decides what a model runs on, never its name or address, and the page redraws itself when a round starts or ends.

Searches and captions go to the NPU first.

What changed

  • Re-ranking a search by meaning uses the NPU's embedding server whenever it's the first one that hasn't failed. If it isn't running, the search is ranked by words, and says why; a graphics card is used only when the NPU doesn't serve embeddings, or failed lately.
  • The caption line on the page no longer says "whichever is free first": it says the others caption only what the NPU can't.
  • It carries the Steward's kit 2.13.0, whose requests go to the NPU whenever it can do them.
