The Miller

HouseholdWorks with you

Big videos and photos, made small.

Drop big videos and photos in its hopper folder: it makes smaller copies that look and play the same, and keeps one only when it's really smaller and passes its checks. Originals are left alone until you say.

Tenants ground their grain at the lord's mill, and the miller took a toll.

What's new

Every release

0.5.12

The Miller makes video copies out of the box: it fetches its own FFmpeg when this PC has none.

What's new

  • When there's no FFmpeg on this PC, the Miller fetches its own, once: a small LGPL build (about 12 MB) for Arm or x64 PCs, checked against the exact build it expects before it's used. It reaches your PC's own video encoder through Windows' Media Foundation, so copies are quick and light on power. Before, videos waited in the hopper until you found and installed an FFmpeg yourself.

What changed

  • If the download fails (no internet, or GitHub having a bad hour), the Miller tries again on a later round by itself.
  • An FFmpeg of your own still comes first: on PATH, where the Miller found it before, or named in the FFmpeg setting. With that setting filled in, the Miller never fetches one.
  • When the video encoder refuses, the page says what to do in plain words instead of a build instruction.

Before you update

  • Nothing: it updates itself as usual.

Installing

  • Castellan installs and updates it by itself. To install it by hand, unpack the zip anywhere and run node src\cli.ts install (Node 22.18 or later). SHA256SUMS.txt lists its SHA-256 (PowerShell: Get-FileHash).
